Many deem whole or two-percent their milk of choice, but others prefer dairy-free milk alternatives, like almond milk.

However, this nut milk isn’t the only option for Roasty readers who don’t drink cow’s milk — not even close!

There are several other alternatives, like cashew, soy, or coconut milk. And, of course, there’s one of our personal favorites, oat milk.

Oat milk has risen in popularity over the past couple of years, and you can use it anywhere you’d use regular milk: in savory dishes to thicken them, in your bowl of cereal, or in your cups of coffee.

The oat milk use we’re focusing on here, though, is as a base for homemade coffee creamer.

Why Use Oat Milk Creamer?

One of the main reasons so many people add oat milk to their java is because it’s a dairy-free alternative to regular cow’s milk, making it a safe choice for those with lactose intolerance.

But it has other perks, too, including being a good source of fiber, boasting plenty of protein, and having a low-fat content.

These and several other perks are enough to convince many to exchange whole milk for oat milk, but, despite the positives, some people have one complaint about adding it to their cups of coffee: it’s too thin and/or watery!

That’s where oat milk creamer comes in. Because oat milk is the base, oat creamer — a.k.a. oat cream — has the same health benefits but is thicker thanks to the addition of oil.

In fact, that’s the only real difference between the two; if you add oil to oat milk, it becomes a rich oat cream!

Oat Milk Coffee Creamer ingredients

You’ll Need

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon MCT oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • high-speed blender
  • cheesecloth

The Process

Step One

oatmeal and water in a blender

First, pour oats and a cup of water into your blender, and let the ingredients blend for around 30 seconds.

Don’t go any longer than that, though, or you risk ending up with a slimy mess instead of creamy, delicious oat milk creamer.

Step Two

filtered mixture of oats and water through a piece of gauze in a glass

Now, it’s time to filter your blended concoction — after all, you don’t want to end up with gritty oat milk creamer, do you?

Filter the blend of oats and water through a piece of cheesecloth and into a bowl, glass, or any other vessel large enough to hold the oats and water.

You might have to do this a couple of times to ensure all of the oat pulp is out.

Step Three

Dispose of the leftover oat pulp you collected in the cheesecloth. Then, pour the filtered liquid back into the blender.

Add salt, MCT oil, and your liquid sweetener of choice, too. We used maple syrup, but agave syrup and honey will also work.

Let the ingredients blend for a few seconds.

Step Four

Pour your freshly made batch of oat coffee creamer into an airtight container. Then, you can pour it into your cup of coffee or store it in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use it.

If you choose the latter option, do your best to finish it within a week.

A Few FAQs

What’s the Difference Between Oat Creamer and Oat Milk?

The difference between the two liquids lies in their texture.

Oat creamer tends to be creamier and richer than oat milk because it has a higher fat content, courtesy of the emulsifying oil required to make it.

Oat milk, on the other hand, is oil-free, so it’s thinner. It’s also usually not as sweet as oat milk-based creamer.

Can You Add Flavorings to Oat Milk Coffee Creamer?

One of the best parts about homemade oat milk creamer is that it leaves you free to customize its flavor based on your preferences.

When autumn rolls around, sprinkle a few pinches of pumpkin pie spice for the perfect seasonal batch of creamer.

Satisfy your sweet tooth with a teaspoon or so of vanilla extract. Or you can make lavender oat milk creamer; it’s the perfect addition to your coffee drinks when you’re ready to usher in springtime.

Here are some popular add-ins used to make flavored oat cream:

  • Brown sugar. Maple syrup is usually the go-to sweetener for homemade creamer, but if you want to give it a deep, caramel-like sweetness, spoon in some brown sugar instead.
  • Cocoa powder. Chocolate and coffee are a match made in heaven, and one of our favorite means of combining the two is through chocolate-flavored creamer. Make your own by adding cocoa powder to your oat creamer recipe.
  • Vanilla-flavored syrup. Vanilla is a classic, and for a good reason. Fancy flavorings are fun, but sometimes, the old reliable option is the way to go. Blending vanilla extract or vanilla syrup is a way to add subtle yet super-satisfying flavor to oat milk creamer.
  • Cinnamon. You’re in good company if cinnamon is one of your favorite spices, and you’ll be happy to know it makes a lovely addition to homemade oat creamer.

Can I Use Oat Milk Creamer in Place of Oat Milk When I Make a Dessert?

You can make most dishes that call for oat milk with oat creamer.

But remember, creamer is thicker and sweeter than milk, so whatever you’re baking or cooking will be richer and creamier than usual.

Which Types of Oats Are Best for Oat Milk Coffee Creamer?

Rolled oats are our go-to for making oat milk coffee creamer. Quick-cooking oats aren’t ideal; they tend to yield creamer with a gooey, slimy texture — gross!

We don’t recommend steel-cut oats, either. They’re too thick to blend as is. So, you have to soak the oats in water before use, and that potentially ruins your creamer’s texture.

Take a Chance on Homemade Oat Cream

Now that you know it only takes a few simple ingredients and very little time to give your morning cup a creamy, dairy-free twist, there’s only one thing to do: try it yourself!
