If you’re looking for a way to improve your barista skills from the comfort of your own home, finding a few cappuccino recipes to work on is often a good place to start.
Though its name makes it sound fancier than it really is, the cappuccino is a rather simple beverage, consisting of only three basic ingredients: espresso, milk, and milk foam. Because it’s so simple, building on this recipe is easy, leaving you plenty of room to add flavored syrups to your coffee.
This recipe puts a spin on the classic cappuccino with the addition of caramel, which is perhaps one of the most popular coffee add-ins.
WHAT’S A CAPPUCCINO?
We already gave you a quick run-down of the ingredients needed to make this beverage, but you’ve probably got a few more questions about it, and luckily for you, we’ve got answers.
Let’s start with this one: what’s the difference between a latte and a cappuccino? Good question! The answer lies in the milk content. The distinctly layered cappuccino is an even balance of coffee, milk, and foam, while a latte is mostly steamed milk, a shot of espresso, and a light layer of foam.
If you’re wondering where the cappuccino originated, the answer is Italy, and its name is derived from the Capuchin monks, as the color of the drink matched that of their robes.
HOW TO MAKE A HOMEMADE CARAMEL CAPPUCCINO
YOU’LL NEED:
- 1-2 shots of espresso
- 1/2 cup of whole milk
- 2 tablespoons of caramel sauce
THE PROCESS:
Step 1:
The most important step in this recipe is, of course, making your coffee, so begin by firing up your espresso machine and pull a shot (or two, if you’re looking for a bit more caffeine to kickstart your morning).
Step 2:
Pour your espresso into a mug and stir in a few tablespoons of sweet caramel sauce.
Step 3:
Next, it’s time to make your milk foam. This step can’t be skipped, as foam is one of the main ingredients for a good cappuccino. Pull out your pitcher and steaming wand, and steam your milk of choice until it’s foamy on top. If you don’t have a steaming wand handy, don’t fret; use a manual milk frother instead.
Step 4:
Pour the milk over the espresso and caramel mixture slowly, but hold off on pouring the foam in the cup — you’ll need it later.
Step 5:
Last, use a spoon to shovel the foam on top of your drink, and finish the drink off by adding a drizzle of caramel syrup.
