If you’ve been a Roasty reader for a while, you know how much we love the taste of coffee. If it’s been brewed from high-quality beans, it can be enjoyed without any add-ins — no creamer, no sugar, just a smooth, delicious cup of coffee.
But we’re not strictly black coffee snobs here. We love a good latte or macchiato from time to time, and when the mood is right, nothing quite hits the spot like a cool and refreshing blended frappuccino.
WHAT’S A FRAPPUCCINO?
If you frequently visit a Starbucks Coffee Company location or know someone who does, you’ve likely heard the word “frappuccino.” This term has been trademarked by the popular franchise and refers to their line of cold, blended coffee drinks. Think milkshake, but with a caffeinated kick.
A frappuccino usually includes ice, espresso, and other ingredients like sugar, flavored syrups, milk, and whipped cream, and it’s easy to make your own version of these drinks at home.
And that’s exactly what we’re going to show you how to do today! Our frappuccino recipe is a copycat of a Starbucks favorite, the java chip frappuccino. This drink is a lovely blend of coffee and chocolate, so if you’ve got a major sweet tooth and slight caffeine addiction, this is a treat you’re sure to love.
MAKE A JAVA CHIP FRAPPUCCINO AT HOME
YOU’LL NEED:
- 1 1/2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup
- 1 1/2 tablespoons of chocolate chips
- 1 cup of strong coffee
- 1-2 cups of ice
- Whipped cream
- Blender
THE RECIPE:
Step 1:
First things first: you need to brew your coffee. You can use whatever kind of coffee you want, and for a stronger drink, pour in a shot of espresso instead.
Step 2:
Next, add all the ingredients except the ice — chocolate chips, coffee (or espresso!), and chocolate syrup — to your blender and blend until the ingredients are mixed but still chunky.
Step 3:
After your mocha mixture has been blended, add one to two cups of ice cubes to the blender, and blend until the drink is smooth.
Step 4:
You’re almost ready to enjoy your frappuccino! Pour the mixture into a tall glass, and top it off with a dollop of sweet, fluffy whipped cream. Drizzle chocolate syrup on top and you’re finished! (If you feel like adding a little something extra, you can add chocolate shavings to your toppings, too — so delicious!)

ENJOY!
This Starbucks java chip frappuccino copycat is a delicious way to get your coffee fix, especially on a sweltering summer day. Feel free to make a few changes to the recipe until you create the perfect flavor for you. For example, if regular chocolate chips are a bit too sweet, use semi-sweet instead, or try using a drizzle of dark chocolate syrup if that better suits your taste.
