Breaking It Down…CBD-Style
Is CBD oil just a basic add-in for your food, drinks, and coffees, or is it something else entirely? Let’s dig a little deeper.
What is CBD?
CBD, better known as cannabidiol, is a natural compound found in cannabis and hemp plants. It was discovered in 1940, and it’s a phytocannabinoid (a fancy word that just means it’s from the cannabis plant) that can be absorbed into the body by several different methods, including but not limited to oral consumption through edibles and tinctures or smoking/inhalation.
Though it may cause hesitation for some people, we’ll be the first ones to tell you CBD is completely natural, safe, and has all kinds of positive qualities you may not even know you needed.
And since we can probably guess what question’s lingering in the back of your mind, we’ll go ahead and address the elephant in the room: the answer is no. Contrary to popular assumption, though CBD comes from the hemp plant (which is also known as marijuana, Mary Jane, or pot), it will not get you high.
CBD vs. THC
No, we’re not just reciting letters in the alphabet. We’re talking about cannabinoids or naturally-occurring compounds found in cannabis plants. Though there are over 100 of them, two of the most common are CBD and THC.
Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the psychoactive component in cannabis that creates the sensation of getting high. CBD, on the other hand, doesn’t have that effect. Though these two cannabinoids can be combined, the FDA has restricted most THC from CBD formulas unless there’s less than 0.3 percent of the psychoactive component present. That’s why it’s important to explore your options and be sure you’re well-informed before you make a purchase.
Of the two, CBD boasts a more positive reputation and more benefits. And for the record, CBD oil is completely legal so long as it is regulated and processed correctly. These regulations aren’t necessary for making sure the “right kind” or “right amount” of CBD is sold properly, but instead to ensure there are no unwanted or harmful chemicals combined with it during distribution.
CBD vs. Hemp
As you read on, you’ll notice we reference both CBD and hemp, so it’s worth asking: is there a difference between the two?
Though they’re often used interchangeably, CBD and hemp oils aren’t the same thing. CBD oil comes from the cannabis plant’s stalks, leaves, and flowers. Hemp, on the other hand, comes from the seeds, and like CBD, it’s known for its health benefits. These good qualities include improving cardiovascular health, supplying antioxidants, and even preventing certain kinds of cancer.
What’s most important to note, though, is that neither of these cannabis products will get you high; they’re both merely enjoyed for the sake of being well.
Is CBD good for you?
Though there’s still so much to learn about CBD, scientists have already discovered it holds many health benefits, including acting as a potential treatment for a variety of severe illnesses and diseases.
CBD is known for attacking symptoms of anxiety and depression head-on, as well as other unpleasantries like inflammation, insomnia, and pain relief. For example, in 2018, Epidiolex, a manufactured drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was released on the market as a treatment for epilepsy.
Doctors have also conducted experiments to see how effective CBD is when it comes to treating cancer patients. And even though there have been no confirmed conclusions, there lies potential in cannabidiol to be even more useful than previously imagined.
So…CBD in coffee?
We know cannabidiol has been consumed through inhalation and edibles, like gummies or candy, for a while, but many CBD and coffee lovers are only now discovering the sheer beauty of pairing these two.
So, is there a good reason for people to put CBD oil in their coffee, or is it just the latest hipster coffee trend that will die in a few months? Read on; you just may find that the benefits of this oily brew are more worthwhile than you might think.
Why put CBD oil in coffee?
Though good health is the primary reason many are adding a few drops of CBD oil to the favorite morning drink of the masses, there are plenty of other reasons to experiment with CBD coffees.
One reason is taste. Unless you invest in an unflavored oil, small doses of cannabidiol can add a mild kick of extra flavor to your brew. While many simply enjoy the taste, that’s not all CBD oil is good for.
One of CBD’s proven effects is the alleviation of caffeine-related jitters, which is why CBD oil with coffee is a genius pairing. Caffeine is great for kickstarting alertness and boosting energy levels, but unfortunately, it can accelerate your heartbeat and increase your stress. And sure, you could just make the switch to decaf, but if you add CBD to the mix, you can experience all the things you love about coffee while minimizing the negative side effects of caffeine.
Brewing with CBD
So, how can you experiment with CBD coffee? One of the trickiest issues to resolve is accessibility, whether that’s getting the coffee from a cafe or by purchasing CBD products, like drops, creamer, or coffee.
Coffee Shops
One of the most immediate and most convenient ways to get CBD in your coffee is by going to the professionals. Certain coffee shops specialize in infusion, blending the perfect amounts of oil and coffee. Since they’re brewing with a specialized ratio, they’re sure to provide you with fresh coffee that’s well-portioned, delicious, and effective.
Brew It Yourself
How can you enjoy the therapeutic benefits of CBD coffee at home, you ask? You’ve got two options.
- Use your preferred brewing process to brew quality ground coffee and add a few drops of CBD oil to the cup, or
- Purchase a bag of CBD-infused beans from a coffee company that specializes in such
We’ll share everything we know about adding oils to your cup of coffee, but first, allow us to introduce you to a few of our favorite already-infused brews.

If you’re a frequent Keurig user, you may want to consider looking into Chill CBD coffee pods. Each pod contains 25 milligrams of CBD isolate, which is a pretty healthy dose for beginner CBD consumers. How to Add Your Own Drops
Want to integrate cannabidiol into your life but aren’t interested in buying a bag of CBD-infused beans? No problem — just add it to a cup of regular coffee! When making CBD coffee at home, the advised amount of oil you should use differs, but a good ballpark ratio is about five to seven milligrams per eight-ounce cup of coffee.
And the great news is that when it comes to adding the CBD, it doesn’t necessarily matter what brewing method you use; from an automatic dripper to a French press, it all works. Just be aware it may leave a thin layer of oil on the surface of your coffee, which may or may not be noticeable depending on how much you put in the joe.
This is certainly more accessible for those who can’t get to a specialty shop, but the primary challenge here is making sure the oil is thoroughly blended into the coffee. Thankfully, there are ways to make this process easier. Make sure any bottles of CBD oil you purchase have droppers so you can accurately measure it before adding it to your brew.
If you prefer milk or creamer in your coffee, adding CBD oil is even simpler. If you have a blender at home, the best thing you can do is brew your coffee, add your desired dosage of CBD with a dropper, pour in milk or creamer, and blend it all for about 20 seconds. Blending is a great method because it breaks down the larger compounds in the oil into small doses, making it easier to absorb into the coffee and in your body. It will also help establish consistency in both flavor and texture.
So, if you enjoy cafe au laits, lattes, cappuccinos, and everything in-between, this simple method will help you thoroughly mix your CBD oil. Whether that’s brewing a cup before your morning commute to work, or during the afternoon if you need something soothing to sip on, all you need to do is find the right oil-to-coffee ratio for you to enjoy this drink daily.
Pro-tip: CBD oil pairs quite well with Bulletproof coffee, too. If you want to mix the oil in your cup of coffee as thoroughly as possible, you can do so by adding a healthy fat source like coconut oil or organic butter to help blend it in. This will also help your body to absorb the CBD oil.
Need a CBD oil recommendation? Try Good Vibes! It’s the perfect partner for your daily dose of caffeine. Adding one or two drops of Good Vibes oil to your morning brew can be a great way to start your day and help you feel awake, alert, calm, and ready to go. And if you struggle with anxiety, a few drops of this might help. Blended with flavors of cinnamon and citrus, Good Vibes won’t only give you a balanced feeling, but a savory taste as well.
Wrapping Up
Though CBD is relatively new to the market and the coffee scene, it can be a great addition to your morning cup. Though there’s much research still being done on CBD, its benefits are already prevalent, and the combination of the antioxidants in coffee along with the healthy compounds in CBD create a perfect blend every coffee connoisseur should enjoy at least once.
Do some research, consult your doctor, and begin brewing away. And as always…happy caffeinating!
